On Saturday, October 16, 2010, a 5K Run/Walk will be held at the Corning Preserve in Albany, NY, in loving memory of Frank E. O’Brien III. The event will also honor Frank's father, Frank E. O’Brien, Jr., who passed away on May 25, 2010.
Camp Erin, created and funded by the Moyer Foundation, is the largest nationwide network of bereavement camps for children and teens ages 6-17 who have experienced the death of someone close to them. Support from the Walk For Frankie ensures that Camp Erin is free to all campers. It costs $500 to send one child to camp and through this walk we hope to send at least 40 kids and teens to camp again this year. The Moyer Foundation is trying to raise money to fund Camp Erin-Albany for 10 years. The Moyer Foundation was founded by Major League All-Star Pitcher, Jamie Moyer and his wife Karen in 2000. One of their many programs is Camp Erin. Today, there are 36 camps in 23 states including one in Canada. Nationally, the U.S. census estimates that one in 20 children will experience the death of a parent by the time they graduate from high school. More than 3,000 children are dealing with this in Albany County. Research indicates these children are at a much greater risk for depression, suicide, poverty, and substance abuse. Children often feel isolated in their grief, but rarely receive grief counseling. With your support this event will help children experience Camp Erin –Albany. CAMP ERIN 2010: MARK YOUR CALENDARS For kids and teens who've lost someone they loved, The Community Hospice will once again sponsor a free overnight camp on the property of the Camp Fowler Retreat Center on Sacandaga Lake the last weekend of September 2010. That's Friday, September 24 through Sunday, September 26. The weekend camp combines traditional high-energy camp activities with grief education and support and gives each young person the opportunity to remember their loved one in special ways.
